Prior Knowledge:
Cue Set:
Show the students pictures of camouflaged animals and ask if they can find animals in the pictures. Have students make predictions about the types of animals that are camouflaged and for what reasons they are hiding themselves
Best Shot Instruction:
Students will read the book Animal Colors in a small group setting. They will pause often to discuss each animal and the reasons for its color(s).
Independent Student Activities:
Each student will choose an animal to write about.
The student will complete an idea web that includes the animals name, where it can be found, what it looks like, how it uses its colors (to hide, to attract, or to scare away predators), and any other important information.
Using the web to organize ideas, the student will complete a draft, putting each idea into a good sentence.
Teacher-Student Interaction:
The student will revise and edit the draft with the teacher in order for the teacher to determine each students understanding of the topic.
The teacher will model the publishing portion of the lesson on the computer and its monitor system by typing a paragraph and creating a graphic illustration to enhance the writing.
Integration of Technology:
Students will use the Super Print program to publish big book pages. They will first use the test frame to type their paragraphs and then use the draw program to create graphic illustrations of their camouflaged animals in their different environments.
Reteaching and Enrichment:
Review and Closure:
