Beacon Tree received two innovation grants for Dream Box Learning and Discovery Tech Book this year. More than 180 students attended the "All A Breakfast" for each card marking, a 16% increase over last year. Beacon Tree’s Science Olympiad team came in 3rd place for Macomb County. The Destination Imagination 3rd grade team placed 4th and qualified for the state tournament. Students received recognition for chess, honors choir and district art awards. Horizontal and vertical data teaming between grade levels provided a common language and increased alignment of the curriculum. Academic achievement has been enhanced through quality professional development; data teams and data director training; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) exploration; research-based best instructional practices and strategies; support staff involved in the RTI (Response to Intervention) early intervention reading program in kindergarten through third grade; “World of Motion” engineering collaborations with General Motors; homework assistance available through an after school Homework Club; a fully equipped science lab; wireless advanced technology; video-conferencing; after-school enrichment programs; the academically gifted and talented (ATG) program for qualifying fourth through sixth grade students and numerous off-site learning experiences. Partnerships with our parent group, classroom volunteers, STAR (Specially Trained Academic Representatives) and many area businesses contribute to an enriched learning environment for our students. We thank the Beacon Tree Volunteers for providing special activities for our students and for purchasing additional educational supplies and equipment. Communication with the community is supported through the Beacon Tree Web site with downloadable flyers, forms and newsletters, Pod casts of student projects and photo sheets available to parents. Beacon Tree students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences beyond the classroom: “Reaching for Success,” a positive behavior support program; “Bucket Fillers,” recognizing acts of kindness; and curriculum enrichment opportunities such as Science Olympiad, Mathematics Olympiad, Social Studies Olympiad, Destination Imagination, Lego Robotics, Chess Club, Honors Choir, band, career focus, talent show, student council, service squad, safety patrol, math, and other community outreach programs that support charitable organizations. |
