Students in 5th grade are creating realistic portraits. They learned about proportions. Proportion is the way that the size of one object relates to the size of another object. The kids learned how the various parts of the face relate to each other in terms of size.
They also learned how to create realistic flesh tones using just white, brown and red. We painted on brown paper because the old masters (Leonardo and Rembrandt) used a brown ground to make the flesh tones come alive.
