As part of our study of various genres of art class, kids in grades 1-3 created winter landscapes. A landscape is a picture of an outdoor scene. We looked out the art room windows at the neighborhood surrounding the school to get ideas of what should be included in the landscape paintings. It was some of the kids who decided to add holiday lights to our winter landscapes, as this wasn't part of the original lesson idea. Allowing kids to take ownership of the lesson, increases their connection to the concepts being taught. Aside from learning what a landscape is, the kids learned how to start a painting by blocking in large shapes first, and then moving onto the smaller details near the end.
