February 2012 - Principal's Video Message and BurrBulldogs Tweets

Dear Bulldog Families,

It is hard to believe that February is upon us and we haven’t really experienced winter yet. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I would like you to consider giving your child the love of reading and learning.

Our kindergarten through third grade students and Mrs. Sandison’s sixth graders have classroom goals of reading at home every night for 15 minutes. Let’s do the math for reading. If a child reads at home 15 minutes a night for 5 nights every week for the rest of the school year that’s 1,500 minutes of reading practice. That makes reading a habit and your child will develop a love for reading and learning.

At our next Burr Community Recognition Assembly, I will be giving out trophies to the classroom at each grade level that has the best “reading at home” participation. Excellence is expected and will continue to be celebrated at Burr.

Third through sixth grade will also be recognized at our next recognition assembly. I will be giving out trophies that say “Bulldog Best” to the classroom at each grade level that has the least amount of missing assignments. As partners in the learning process, it is important to know that being “smart” can be achieved through persistence, hard work and effective effort. Please make sure that your child completes their assignments on time. We expect every child to do their very best.

You can track the progress of your child using Powerschool. If you have not stopped by the office to get your username and password, please do so soon. For the upper grades, it is a great way to track your child’s progress in school. You can also check to see how well your child’s class is doing by going to the Sense of Urgency page at BurrElementary.org.

We continue to look for ways to help families with school work at home. Online learning is a great way to help your child at home. Later this month we will be rolling out an online math program called KhanAcademy.org. This is a great web-based site that allows children to work on math skills at their own pace. Your child will need a gmail account and password to enter the program. Parents need to set up the gmail accounts. More information will be coming home soon.

I can’t say enough about our Burr PTO officers and working parents Mrs. Hill, Mrs. Aho and Mrs. Cantwill. They were here handling all the Little Caesar Pizza kits which raised additional money to allow our children to go on field trips this year. Our officers work very hard and need your help. If you are interested in helping, please contact any one of these wonderful ladies or me. I know they would appreciate the extra help. This month the Burr PTO sponsored pizza kits, has a general meeting and a Sock Hop.

As a learning community, we will continue to pay strict attention to and serve the needs of all our students in order to meet our district goa thatl: “Every Child Achieves.”

Take Care,
