Summer 2016

Principal's Video Message

Dear Bulldog Community,

As we look forward to summer, I would like to share with you all the activities that will be available to your children online at in early June.

Join the Summer Learning Bandwagon at Burr Elementary.
Summer is here and it is often a time when students who have made academic gains throughout the school year, slowly slip backwards. As your educational partner, we have developed several key items for your child to have as resources to work on over the summer to maintain & even strengthen their skills.

Burr’s 6th Annual Summer Learning Challenge
I would strongly encourage you and your child to take part in this worthwhile experience. Did you know it is cool to think about school over the summer? Please choose to participate in our online summer learning program. When the summer is over, your child will need to show proof to Mr. Hardy that they contributed to their learning in one or more of the following activities at this summer:

Complete the Online Summer Math Packet
Our Bulldogs had a busy year learning new math skills and concepts. Mastering all of these skills and concepts is extremely important in order to develop a solid math foundation. The math skills that your child has learned this year must be mastered for your child to be able to understand the new skills that will be taught next year. Each year builds upon the previous year’s math skills and concepts. So any time spent reviewing or reinforcing these skills and concepts will be very beneficial for your child. Summer math packets are aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

Dreambox (online personalized math program)
DreamBox Learning is a K-5 adaptive online math program that is widely used in US elementary schools. Adaptive means that the program captures every decision a student makes while working in the software and adjusts the student’s learning path in real time, maintaining just the right degree of difficulty and no gaps in understanding.

Complete the Summer Writing Journal
At Burr, we have worked toward building a writing community. Children in all grades have participated in Writers Workshop in their classroom. Writers must write to communicate ideas, convey meanings, and express feelings. They must write often to become proficient. Writers improve by writing! Journaling provides an excellent opportunity for writing practice. This summer the Burr website will provide several prompts for your child to choose from to respond in a journal that you provide.

BookFlix (New this Year)
Scholastic BookFlix is a new online literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks from Weston Woods with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to build a love of reading and learning. The engaging way to link fact and fiction, BookFlix reinforces early reading skills and introduces children to a world of knowledge and exploration. Take a tour of Scholastic BookFlix

Attend Burr Summer School program (only qualifying students are invited)

Summer Reading Challenge 2016
This summer, we will offer our exciting 1000+ minute reading challenge. Books are a great source of imagination and enjoyment for all of us. This summer, record the number of minutes you read each day on the calendar then record the total minutes for the months of June, July, August and up until September 8th. Add up how many minutes you read each month for a grand total of minutes read over the summer. Remember, just Imagine a ½ Million Minutes of Reading!

Do your Bulldog Best!
I am only accepting quality work. If your child chooses to participate, complete the activities, and return them to me in the fall. I will collect the evidence of participation the first week of school. If you have it, you will be invited to an ice cream party with me in September!

Take Care,
