Lesson Focus:  Details   GLCE: W.GN.01.03

 

Literature used (if applicable): In November by Cynthia Rybant

 

Introduction:  As a whole group, brainstorm ideas about November and make a list of simple sentences about November.  Tell the students that you are going to read a story that has sentences with a lot of details. 

 

Teaching:  Read the story In November, pointing out specific sentences that have a lot of details.  There are many sentences with descriptive details.

 

Active Involvement: After reading the book, re-read the initial sentences about November.  As a group, re-write the sentences using descriptive details. 

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy:  Tell students “In your writing today, I want you to use details in your writing like we just did with our sentences about November.  If you are revising, add some details to your sentences.
