Lesson Focus: Descriptive Language GLCE:WPS.03.01
Literature used (if applicable): Some Birthday! By Patricia Polacco
Introduction: “Today we are going to read a book by Patricia Polacco called, Some Birthday. After reading the story, we are going to survey it for strong descriptive language.” Prior to teaching, the teacher puts post it notes on the pages he/she wants to highlight for descriptive language.
Teaching: Read Some Birthday! What are examples of strong descriptive language? What are awesome adjectives? What is varied word choice? Teacher should revisit Some Birthday! Refer to sticky note pages. Students may select and record examples of these descriptive languages styles. Record these different descriptive language examples on a chart labeled: Awesome Adjectives and Varied Word Choice.
Active Involvement: Students will select and record examples of descriptive language on a previously prepared chart. They will record examples of Awesome Adjectives and Varied Word Choice.
Applying the Skill or Strategy:
Today, when you are writing, I want you to practice using descriptive language in your writing.
