Lesson Focus:  PERSONAL STYLE 

GLCE: W. ST. O4.O1

Literature used: Why Epossumondas Has No Hair On His Tail

 

Introduction: Read a few pages and ask students what they notice about this book ( as far as the author’s style  and descriptive writing ).

 

Teaching: Discussion on “Figurative Language”.  How do you identify it? Teacher shares examples from pages previously read.

 

 

Active Involvement:  Teacher will read the remainder of the story while students record examples of figurative language they hear on sticky notes. After the story ends students will share their findings by posting their note on a “figurative language” chart.

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy: 

Given a paragraph of generic student writing, students will replace the common words with figurative language.  After a work period students will get together and share changes.

 

The following day students will be asked to improve their own previous piece of writing by adding figurative language.

 

Look in the English book and Reading manual to see if there are some other lessons to be used.
