Writer’s Workshop Mini-Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus:  Sensory Images GLCE: W.ST.04.01

Literature used (if applicable): Jumanji by: C. Van Allsburg

Introduction:  Purpose: Students will listen for sensory words.  Give students 5 different colored cards.  Each card represents one of the 5 senses.  As the teacher reads Jumanji  to the whole class, the students raise the appropriate sensory card when it is used in the story.

Teaching:  Students will trace a pattern of their hand on construction paper.  Then write the five senses on each finger with a teacher selected topic in the palm.

Active Involvement: With a close partner, students will orally describe the topic found on the palm of the hand using their 5 senses.  Then they will provide each other with feedback on how to improve their descriptions.

Applying the Skill or Strategy:  Now choose one of their writing pieces in progress and identify areas where they can utilize their senses to write more descriptively.
