WriterŐs Workshop Mini-Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus:  Using Exaggeration in tall tales  GLCE: W.PS.05.01

Literature used (if applicable):  Houghton Mifflin Series

Introduction:  Today I am going to read a tall tale called John Henry Races the Steamboat.  This book is filled with exaggerations.

Teaching:  What is an exaggeration?  (Discussion)  Give examples of some exaggerations you know.

Active Involvement:  Students listen to the story and record exaggeration that the author used in the story.

After readingÉTogether make a list of the exaggerations used.

Applying the Skill or Strategy:  Today, when you are writing, I want you to practice using exaggerations in your writing.  You need to write three exaggerations that correspond to the character you have chosen for your tall tale.

In sharing time today, we want to hear your three exaggerations that you created for your character.  Our comments will focus on this skill.
