Writer's Workshop Mini-Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus: Attention Grabbers     GLCE:W.PS.05.01

Literature Used:

 Student anthology

Today we are going to practice writing attention-grabbing beginnings.

Read examples of boring beginnings. Use an encyclopedia as an example of a boring beginning. Show students examples of interesting leads. Find them in the student anthology. Then, take a subject, and with the students write together an example of how to write a question lead, an interesting fact lead, and an example lead.

Active Involvement:

Have students in small groups practice how to write the above leads.

Applying the Skill or Strategy:

Have students go back to a piece of writing and rewrite their lead making it interesting.
