Lesson Focus: Attention Grabbers     GLCE:W.PS.05.01

 

Literature Used: 

 Student anthology

 

Introduction:

Today we are going to practice writing attention-grabbing beginnings.

 

Teaching: 

Read examples of boring beginnings. Use an encyclopedia as an example of a boring beginning. Show students examples of interesting leads. Find them in the student anthology. Then, take a subject, and with the students write together an example of how to write a question lead, an interesting fact lead, and an example lead.

 

Active Involvement: 

Have students in small groups practice how to write the above leads.

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy: 

Have students go back to a piece of writing and rewrite their lead making it interesting.
