Literature used (if applicable):  A light in the Attic, By Shel Silverstein

 

Introduction:  Today I am going to read to you an assortment of poetry from A Light in the Attic by Shel Siverstein.

 

Teaching:  What is a poem?  Do the words have to rhyme?  Must we write complete sentences?  Do we use punctuation marks?

 

Listen to the poem, ŇIckle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me, Too.Ó  What did the poem mean to you?  Did you have a picture in your mind?  Discuss Shel SilversteinŐs writing style.

 

 

Active Involvement: Reread the poem and have students say rhyming words aloud.

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy: Today, when you are writing, I want you to practice using rhyming in your poem. 

 

In sharing time today, we want to hear how you used rhyming words in your writing.  Our comments will focus on this skill.
