Writer's Workshop Mini-Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus: Hooks                 GLCE: W.PS.05.01

Literature Used:

Thank you, Mr. Falker   By: Patricia Polacco

Today I'm going to read a book titled, Thank you, Mr. Falker. This book has great hooks that interest the reader.

What is a hook? A hook grabs the reader's attention and makes the reader want to read more. Without a good hook a reader may lose interest in the selection, quickly.

Active Involvement:

As I read this story, I want you to write down all the hooks that appealed to you on post-it notes. After reading the story, stick all the notes on chart paper, and talk about what made these phrases interesting.

Applying the Skill or Strategy:

Today in your writing, I would like you to practice grabbing the reader's attention by writing an interesting hook.
