Lesson Focus: Using specific words

 

GLCE: W.PR.05.04 and W.PS. 05.01

Materials needed: Transparencies of paragraphs with general nouns that could be replaced with specific nouns

 

Introduction:  "Today we are going to practice replacing general words with more specific words to make your writing more exciting."

 

Teaching:  Model using general nouns and replacing them with more specific nouns. Write these examples on the board-

I.e. candy-Hershey's bar; automobile- rickety, beat up Chevy pickup; TV show- Full House; dog- German Shepard

 

 

Active Involvement:  Students are shown paragraphs on OH and identify common nouns and replace those with more specific nouns.

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy:  Today when you are writing is sure to use very specific nouns instead of general nouns.
