Introduction:

Today I am going to read the book Zathurza, By: Chris Van Allsburg. Something surprising, happens at the end of the story. Listen for it, while I read the story to you.

 

Teaching: 

What do we mean by a surprise ending? Can you think of a story you read with a surprise ending?

Read the story and discuss the surprise ending.

 

Active Involvement: 

While the story is being read, listen for clues that might help you detect the surprise. When you hear a clue, write it down on a post-it note. Talk about the clues the students wrote down.

 

Applying the Skill or Strategy: 

When you are writing today, write a surprise ending.
