Writer’s Workshop Mini-Lesson Plan

Lesson Focus: Strong Endings                GLCE: W.PS.06.01

Literature used:  All The Places to Love by Patricia MacLachlan

Introduction: Today I am going to share with you the story

All The Places to Love.  This story has a very strong and unique ending.

Teaching:  What is the importance of good endings? (Discussion)

Read story.  Students write on sticky note their opinion of why that ending is considered strong.  If they feel it is not strong, how would they make it stronger? (Post it notes will be placed at front of room on poster for later reference)

Active Involvement:  Students are broken into their groups. Each group chooses a book from a pile of pre-selected titles.  The group reads the book and identifies why the ending is considered strong.  Each group shares their ending and reasons with the class.

Applying the Skill or Strategy:  Today as you are working on the endings to your story, remember what makes a strong ending.  Look back at the post notes for tips.  Be prepared to share your strong ending during peer conferencing and teacher conferences.
