Helping Our Students Achieve

Exploratory Language
At the exploratory level the student will be exposed to French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

 


In the area of communication,
The student will:

Demonstrate understanding of simple concrete words, phrases, questions and directions; and

Utilize words, phrases, and simple sentences in the target language.

 


In the area of culture,
The student will:

Recognize the existence of diverse cultures; and

Participate in cultural activities.

 


In the area of connections,
The student will:

Reinforce and further the knowledge of geography, social science, language arts, fine arts, and technology.

 


In the area of comparisons,
The student will:

Recognize the presence of English words in other languages;

Recognize the presence of foreign words in the English language in the form of cognates;

Develop understanding of the similarities and differences between one's own culture and other cultures; and

Demonstrate understanding of the target language pronunciation and relation to familiar English words and phrases.

 


In the area of communities,
The student will:

Cultivate an interest in further foreign language studies; and

Recognize some aspects of other cultures represented in one's own culture.

 


French I
In the area of communication,
The student will:

Develop listening and speaking skills through regular use of the language lab (high school only);

Engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions as well as understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics; and

Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics including the following: greetings and introductions; daily life encompassing family, school, and leisure-time activities; numbers to make purchases; telling time and expressing dates; people and their possessions; and weather and the seasons.

 


In the area of culture,
The student will:

Explore the products, behavioral practices, and perspectives of French speaking countries;

Explore the ethnic diversity of the French speaking world;

Explore French cuisine;

Examine daily life rituals;

Discuss the French educational system;

Discuss family relationships; and

Explore the products and perspectives of the given cultures.

 


In the area of connections,
The student will:

Reinforce and/or expand personal knowledge of geography, language arts, technology, music and the arts, life skills, mathematics, and science.

 


In the area of comparisons,
The student will:

Compare and contrast the French language with the English language and recognize the ways in which language reflects culture;

Identify basic sound systems, word order patterns, cognates, grammatical structures, vocabulary, and formulas for politeness; and

Compare and contrast French and American cultures in the areas of school systems, cuisine, eating customs, family life, the number system, traditional celebrations, the calendar, and routine social courtesy.

 


In the area of communities,
The student will:

Use the language and knowledge of culture both within and beyond the school setting in a variety of activities which may include the use of technology, community field trips, and native speaker interaction; and

Show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using French for personal enjoyment and enrichment.


French II
In the area of communication,
The student will:

Develop listening and speaking skills through regular use of the language lab (high school only);

Engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions as well as understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics; and

Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics to include the following: leisure-time activities; clothing; school and daily life; shopping and essential errands; travel; food and meals; directions and getting around in the city; and sports.

 


In the area of culture,
The student will:

Explore the products, behavioral practices, and perspectives of France and French speaking countries;

Experience French cuisine;

Explore French media;

Discuss specialty stores and shopping; and

Discover Paris.

 


In the area of connections,
The student will:

Reinforce and/or expand personal knowledge of geography, language arts, technology, music and the arts, history, life skills, and science.

 


In the area of comparisons,
The student will:

Compare and contrast the French language with the English language and recognize the ways in which language reflects culture;

Compare sound systems, word order patterns, cognates, grammatical structures, vocabulary, and formulas for politeness; and

Compare and contrast French and American cultures in the areas of cuisine, eating customs, lodging, vacation and traveling, traditional celebrations, holidays, and routine social courtesy.

 


In the area of communities,
The student will:

Use the language and knowledge of culture both within and beyond the school setting in a variety of activities which may include the following: the use of technology; community field trips; travel abroad opportunities; French cinema; and native speaker interaction; and

Show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using French for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

 


French III
In the area of communication,
The student will:

Develop listening and speaking skills through regular use of the language lab;

Engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions as well as understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics; and

Present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics include the following: leisure-time activities; family celebrations; shopping and fashion; travel; dining experiences; sports and health; getting around in the city and the country; current events; and short literary selections.

 


In the area of culture,
The student will:

Explore the products, behavioral practices, and perspectives of France and French speaking countries;

Experience French cuisine;

Explore French media;

Explore the French life style;

Examine the geography of the French speaking countries; and

Read selections of French literature.

 


In the area of connections,
The student will:

Reinforce and/or expand personal knowledge of geography, language arts, technology, music and the arts, history, life skills, and science.

 


In the area of comparisons,
The student will:

Compare and contrast the English language with the French language and recognize the ways in which language reflects culture;

Compare word order patterns, cognates, grammatical structures, vocabulary, and formulas for politeness; and

Compare and contrast French and American cultures in the areas of healthy living, regional cuisine, eating customs, leisure-time activities, lodging, vacation and traveling, traditional celebrations, holidays, and routine social courtesy.

Use the language and knowledge of culture both within and beyond the school setting in a variety of activities which may include the use of technology, community field trips, travel abroad opportunities, and native speaker interaction; and

Show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using French for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
