UTICA
CENTER FOR MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY
|
|
Description - The Utica Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology is a specially designed four-year program for students of the Utica Community Schools in grades nine through twelve. This program has been developed for the academically talented student who has an interest in mathematics, science, computer science and curriculum integrated technology. The Center was established in August of 1996 and is comprised of students from the four Utica district high schools: Eisenhower, Henry Ford II, Stevenson, and Utica. The UCMST is an active member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology.
Selection - Students are selected for the UCMST in the spring of their eighth grade year. Students who have been previously enrolled in the accelerated Project Math Program in the seven Utica junior high schools are eligible to apply. Selection of the top 75 students from approximately 225+ applicants is determined by academic record, performance on achievement and aptitude tests, and a letter of intent. All UCMST students are preparing for college careers.
Faculty
- The faculty is comprised of eight instructors and a counselor/dean of students. All faculty members have masters or specialist degrees. Their preparation, experience and creativity characterize the teaching staff.
School
day - All students have one half day of course work at their home high schools including English, social studies, and electives. Students are transported to the Center for their mathematics, science, and technology instruction. While all UCMST subjects are taught each day, highly flexible time scheduling fosters opportunities for innovative labs, projects, and instruction.
Grading
- Although all courses are taught at an accelerated or Advanced Placement level, UCMST grades are unweighted and are averaged with the grades at the student’s home high school to determine both grade point average and class rank. The student’s home high school profile explains graduation requirements and grade point averaging guidelines.
